(WHAS11) -- A Buechel boy with terminal brain cancer got the day of his life Wednesday, he was an honorary firefighter for a day.
Kevin Olguin celebrated with his classmates, his family, the mayor and some University of Louisville athletes.
The 9-year-old never expected two firefighters to arrive at his Buechel home to escort him to an unforgettable day.
The warm welcome Kevin received at a downtown Louisville fire station was only the beginning. He also got his own jacket, name tag and a badge of courage. It was a moment that was almost overwhelming for Kevin, who ran to hug his mom right after.
Kevin is fighting terminal brain cancer that was discovered in November of 2011. He has had chemo and radiation off and on since his diagnosis.
"In the hospital, it's very uncomfortable..." Kevin said at the event.
A firefighter actually found out about Kevin's story while he was at Kevin's school one day. He was touched and wanted to treat him to something very special.
"Unfortunately there's going to be experiences he may never see. I thought we could take a day and show him things that he likes," Captain Mark LaMaster with the Metro Fire Department said.
LaMaster arranged for Kevin's classmates to join him on the special field trip. Even Mayor Fischer was there to give Kevin a proclamation that made him firefighter for a day. Add some pizza to the mix and you have a kid's dream.
"Here at the fire station there is really cool stuff and I'm here with my friends and having fun," Kevin said.
Kevin's sisters Mariela, Stephanie, Nadia and his mother, have all been working opposite shifts to make sure Kevin gets to treatment, to school and gets the care he needs. They admit it is tough, especially knowing the prognosis is not good.
"He's so curious about everything. He wants to know what everything is. When you look at him you can't tell that something is wrong with him. To see him so happy just brings so much happiness to everyone. It makes everything we have been through worth it," Stephanie and Mariela Olguin said.
